UK, US Refuse to Sign International AI Declaration at Paris Summit

The United Kingdom and the United States have not joined the international agreement on artificial intelligence adopted at a global summit in Paris, the BBC reports.
The document, which was signed by France, China, India and a number of other countries, provides for an ‘open’, ‘inclusive’ and ‘ethical’ approach to the development of artificial intelligence technologies.
The discussions at the summit focused on the impact of AI on society and the environment, as well as the measures needed to harness its benefits and mitigate potential risks.
Initially, neither the US nor the UK explained the reasons for their refusal to sign the declaration.
However, speaking at the summit, US Vice President J.D. Vance noted that excessive regulation of artificial intelligence could ‘kill a transforming industry at a time when it is just beginning to develop’. According to him, AI is ‘an opportunity that the Trump administration will not miss’.
He also stressed that the ‘policy of AI development’ should prevail over security issues.
In turn, the British Prime Minister's spokesperson explained the government's position at the briefing that the UK will always put ‘national interests first in these areas,’ The Guardian reports.
At the summit in Paris, politicians, state leaders and diplomats discussed ways to reap the economic benefits of artificial intelligence innovations while seeking to minimise the risks associated with it.
