Ukraine Deploys Artificial Intelligence in Warfare
Ukraine is utilizing artificial intelligence in defense systems and on the frontline in its ongoing conflict, according to polskieradio.pl.
Independent military analysts have noted that unmanned aerial vehicles, remote-controlled devices, drones, and computer programs simulating aggressor actions are consistent components of the defensive warfare strategy pursued by Kyiv. While the Kremlin regime boasted about its modern weaponry for years, there has been no evidence of its deployment in the battlefield since the invasion began.
Ukrainian military expert Ivan Marchenko confirmed that Kyiv began developing AI-based systems after Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014:
"This was applied in border services and the National Police of Ukraine. Currently, artificial intelligence is being employed in anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense systems, as well as in reconnaissance and security systems along the front line," highlighted Ivan Marchenko.
Specifically, Ukrainian programmers are implementing AI-based systems for drones. Equipped with such technology, unmanned aerial vehicles can not only detect Russian vehicles concealed beneath tree canopies and camouflage nets but can also accurately identify the type of equipment – be it a tank, self-propelled artillery, armored transport vehicle, radar, or even a missile system. Information regarding the location and type of Russian equipment is relayed to headquarters, where commanders only need to select the target.
Subsequently, the drone passes over the target and stabilizes at a high altitude to muffle the sound of its rotors. These drones usually carry two bombs. Due to the altitude and the potential for missing the target, the first bomb is considered a "test." It often bypasses the enemy vehicle, but based on where it explodes, the drone adjusts its position and drops the second payload, which consistently hits the target.
Furthermore, engineers, with the assistance of external specialists, have significantly reduced the cost of these explosive devices. While a single missile for a super drone like the Bayraktar could cost tens of thousands of dollars, an AI-equipped drone's bomb costs no more than a thousand dollars. This is an exceptionally attractive price, considering that the destruction of a tank, which it can achieve, costs a million dollars or more, not to mention a missile complex.
According to evaluations by independent military analysts, the Ukrainian army surpasses its Russian counterpart in terms of technology and training level. The only advantage held by the Kremlin forces is their considerable manpower, which Russian dictator Vladimir Putin sends into certain death.
