World’s First AI Law Comes into Force in the EU
The European Union has enacted the Artificial Intelligence Act, a law that will regulate the rules in the field of artificial intelligence. This is stated in the press release of the European Commission of 1 August.
"Today, the European Artificial Intelligence Act, the world's first comprehensive regulation on artificial intelligence, comes into force. The law is designed to ensure that artificial intelligence developed and used in the EU is trustworthy and has guarantees to protect fundamental human rights. The law aims to create a harmonised internal market for artificial intelligence in the EU, encourage the adoption of this technology and create a favourable environment for innovation and investment," the EC said.
AI-based systems, such as chatbots, will now have to clearly inform users that they are interacting with a machine.
Companies will be able to voluntarily adopt additional codes of conduct for AI.
Also, AI systems identified as high-risk will have to meet strict requirements, log activity, provide clear information to users, and comply with cybersecurity.
AI-based systems deemed to be a clear threat to fundamental human rights will be banned.
EU member states have one more year until 2 August 2025 to designate national competent authorities that will oversee the application of the rules for AI systems and carry out market surveillance activities.
