Ukraine Steps into the European AI Community with Observer Status

Ukraine has taken another step towards digital European integration by officially joining the European AI Board as an observer.
The Gaze reports on it, referring to the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine.
On October 24, the AI team of the Ministry of Digital Transformation participated in a High-Level Board meeting for the first time.
This step was an important milestone on the path to European integration and Ukraine's approximation to the standards of the AI Act, the European regulation in the field of artificial intelligence. Ukraine was granted observer status by the European Commission after bilateral negotiations held in March this year.
The Ukrainian delegation presented its achievements in the field of AI, in particular the implementation of the White Paper on Artificial Intelligence, the preparation of the National AI Strategy until 2030, the launch of an AI assistant in the “Diia” application, and the development of a large language model.
The need to create an AI Sandbox and develop regulatory institutions was also emphasized, and Ukraine's desire to join the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking was expressed.
At the meeting, EU countries discussed the development of AI Factories, national adaptation of the AI Act, and ways to simplify regulation in the field of artificial intelligence.
“Ukraine's participation in the AI Board is not only recognition but also a strategic step towards a shared digital future for Europe,” according to the Ministry of Digital Transformation.
Ukraine also plans to become one of the world's top three leaders in artificial intelligence integration by 2030, implementing it in education, medicine, business, defense, and cybersecurity.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that the state is forming an ecosystem for the development of innovations — from defense tech and robotic systems to MedTech, EdTech, BioTech, and AgroTech solutions, which should become the basis for Ukraine's technological breakthrough and economic growth.
As The Gaze informed earlier, Ukraine became the first country to routinely use swarms of drones with artificial intelligence on the battlefield, and is now preparing to test even larger-scale operations with over a hundred drones.
