U.S. Is Considering 15-Year Security Guarantees for Ukraine, Zelenskyy Says
The U. S. is currently considering a framework of long-term security guarantees for Ukraine lasting 15 years, with the possibility of extension, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a chat with journalists on Monday, The Gaze reports exclusively.
Zelenskyy stressed that the issue of guarantees is actively under discussion between Kyiv and Washington and has already been addressed both at the working level and directly with U.S. President Donald Trump. While the proposed guarantees are described as strong, their duration is not yet unlimited.
According to Zelenskyy, the current draft documents outline a 15-year period, with mechanisms that would allow the guarantees to be extended in the future. He noted that, given the length of Russia’s war against Ukraine, Kyiv is advocating for an even longer horizon.
“I raised this question personally,” Zelenskyy said, adding that Ukraine would like to explore guarantees lasting 30, 40, or even 50 years, a move he described as potentially historic. Trump, he said, responded that he would give the proposal further thought.
Asked whether Washington is pressing Kyiv with new deadlines amid recent statements by Vladimir Putin, Zelenskyy said no new timelines are being imposed.
“We are not being pushed into any new timelines,” he said. “We are working on sequences of the plan, meaning the order of steps. Our strategy is step by step.”
Zelenskyy stated that the next concrete step would be a meeting at the level of national security advisers in the coming days, which Ukraine hopes to host domestically.
“First of all, we want a meeting at the advisers’ level in the near future. Rustem Umerov has already been in contact with all advisers – American and European,” he explained.
After that, Zelenskyy said, all necessary documents will be prepared at the advisers’ level, paving the way for political decisions. Ukraine is also planning a broad-format meeting with European leaders, followed by leader-level approval of key documents. Only after these stages are completed would Ukraine consider direct engagement with Russia.
“If everything goes step by step, after that there could be a meeting, in one format or another, with the Russians,” Zelenskyy said. “We emphasize this once again – we are ready for the appropriate formats that we have already discussed.”
As The Gaze reported earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that Paris will host a meeting of the “Coalition of the Willing” in early January.
