Volkswagen Overtakes Tesla in Electric Car Sales in Germany
German automotive giant Volkswagen has surpassed Tesla in electric car sales in Germany since the beginning of 2023. According to Electrek, Volkswagen managed to sell 41,475 electric cars in Germany, whereas Tesla sold 40,298 during the same period. Despite Tesla's initial dominance in the market during the first half of the year, Volkswagen regained the top position last month.
In the first seven months of the year, Volkswagen registered 41,475 electric cars, while Germans registered 40,289 Tesla vehicles.
After the launch of the electric version of their iconic microbus, the ID.Buzz, last year, Volkswagen has witnessed increased interest in this model and has been ramping up production. This move likely contributed to their recent edge over the American manufacturer. Following the registration of 2,279 ID.Buzz models in the first half of the year, a staggering 536 were registered in July alone.
Meanwhile, the ID.4 and its sportier variant, the ID.5 GTX, constitute the majority of registrations with 22,405 by the beginning of July. The smaller VW ID.3 follows with 13,647 registrations, while the E-Up model had 2,943 registrations.
The Tesla Model Y, an electric SUV, garnered 29,829 registrations in the German electric car market within the seven months. The Model 3 had 9,045 registrations, followed by the Model S (855) and Model X (494).
By the end of July, the Mercedes automotive group secured the third position with 20,613 registrations, with the EQA model boasting the highest figure at 7,813. Audi stood fourth with 16,786, BMW fifth with 15,987, and Hyundai claimed the sixth spot with 15,411 registrations.
New entrants such as SAIC MG's subsidiary demonstrated higher numbers with 11,638 registrations. Polestar received 4,210, while BYD secured 632 approvals.
As the registrations of electric vans like the ID.Buzz continue to rise, will Volkswagen maintain or expand its advantage over Tesla in the German electric car market? Experts believe that this is well within their reach.
For years, Volkswagen has stated its intention to surpass Tesla and become a global leader in electric car sales. Back in 2010, former VW CEO Martin Winterkorn declared, "The goal is to become the market leader in electric mobility by 2018."
Seven months into 2023, Volkswagen is revitalizing its domestic market. Now, the time has come to accelerate the pace and expand sales worldwide.
