Estonia Deploys Cutting-Edge Anti-Ship Missile System
Estonia has deployed a new Israeli-Singaporean anti-ship missile system, the Blue Spear 5G SSM, capable of targeting objectives across the vast majority of the Baltic Sea, as reported by ERR.
The maximum range of this system's fire is 290 kilometres. Representatives of the Estonian Ministry of Defence emphasize its status as the most advanced and innovative weaponry within the Estonian Defence Forces. Military officials note that the Blue Spear 5G SSM can operate under any weather conditions and at any time of day, enabling strikes against targets beyond the horizon, whether mobile or stationary objects at sea. It's noteworthy that Estonia becomes the first Baltic country to acquire this state-of-the-art armament system.
The project will cost €100 million, including infrastructure investments and future costs.
To facilitate the deployment and maintenance of the missile complex in Estonia, a dedicated coastal defence division will be established, comprising over a hundred military personnel. Some members of the unit have already undergone successful training in handling the Blue Spear 5G SSM system. Currently, the missiles will be stationed on specialized vehicles, with plans in the future to enable launches from the sea by the Estonian Navy.
It's worth noting that such anti-ship systems are already part of Finland's arsenal, with Latvia also planning to acquire them in the Baltic region.
Recall that earlier in February, The Gaze reported that Ukraine received a new package of military aid from Estonia. The aid includes Javelin anti-tank missiles, machine guns, ammunition for small arms, various ground and water vehicles, as well as diving equipment. Specific details, such as the quantity of armaments, arrival time, and location, are not disclosed due to security concerns.
Since 2022, Estonia has provided military aid to Ukraine amounting to around 500 million euros, which accounts for approximately 1.4% of its gross domestic product. The assistance includes Javelin anti-tank missiles, howitzers, artillery ammunition, anti-tank mines, grenade launchers, mortars, transportation vehicles, communication equipment, field hospitals, medicines, personal protective equipment, and dry rations.
