Five Greek Shipping Companies Reinstated on 'War Sponsor List'
The National Agency for Prevention of Corruption (NAPC) has restored the status of five Greek shipping companies on the 'International War Sponsors' list, as these companies failed to fulfil the conditions agreed upon during negotiations for their removal from the list.
This information was reported on the NAPC website.
The Ukrainian and Greek sides had initiated talks with these companies earlier and proposed the following conditions:
Cease practices of turning off transponders to track vessel navigation.
Stop practices of ship-to-ship cargo transfers.
Publicly condemn Russian aggression.
The issues of turning off transponders and ship-to-ship cargo transfers were resolved in the 11th package of EU sanctions, according to the agency. However, these five Greek shipping companies did not meet the stipulated deadline for publicly condemning Russian aggression. Consequently, NAPC reinstated their status on the 'International War Sponsors' list.
It is worth noting that a year ago, NAPC granted 'war sponsor' status to five Greek companies: Dynacom Tankers Management (DTM); Delta Tankers LTD; Thenamaris Ships Management Inc.; Minerva Marine; TMC Tankers LTD.
Despite the sanctions, these companies continued transporting Russian oil and petroleum products, thereby contributing to the aggressor country's budget and financing the Russian invasion, as explained by the agency.
Greece blocked the approval of the 11th package of EU sanctions in June, demanding the removal of its companies from the Ukrainian 'war sponsor' list. Ultimately, Ukraine removed the mentioned companies from the list.
NAPC serves as the body responsible for compliance in the private sector. During compliance procedures, business counterparts undergo scrutiny for integrity, including socially responsible business conduct in accordance with OECD standards.
The 'International War Sponsors' list on the 'War and Sanctions' portal serves as a powerful reputational tool for achieving supply chain integrity on the international level and for driving international businesses out of Russia. Consequently, it reduces the financial and technological capability of the terrorist country to harm Ukrainians. One of the 'pressure levers' of the platform is its collaboration with the World-Check database, which is used by banks and insurance companies for risk assessment.
