Deutsche Bahn has unveiled a new railway station in Zorneding, Bavaria, which is noteworthy for being entirely constructed from wood. The station covers an area of 200 square meters, with the project's implementation costing approximately 2.2 million euros, as reported by Deutsche Bahn.

Local timber was used in the construction of the station, and specific structural elements were manufactured by a local construction company. The standardized wooden modules allow for the same elements to be used in the construction of other buildings with different sizes and layouts.

Solar panels covering an area of 140 square meters have been installed on the station's roof, providing the building with electrical power. Used car batteries are employed to store excess electrical energy, and the temperature inside is regulated by a heat pump, ensuring a comfortable environment in both winter and summer.

All station lights are equipped with energy-efficient bulbs, and the exterior facade is coated with environmentally friendly paint that also regulates the interior temperature. Additionally, windows on the roof reduce the need for artificial lighting.

Inside the waiting area, comfortable seats with mobile phone charging capabilities have been arranged. The station features a shop, barrier-free toilets, and ticket vending machines. A cafe with a terrace and a bicycle parking area for 200 spaces is planned for the front courtyard in the future.

Deutsche Bahn plans to construct similar wooden station buildings at several other small stations in Bavaria. In the summer of 2024, a "green" station is set to open in the city of Haar.

The Gaze previously reported on the commencement of direct railway connections between the Austrian capital Vienna and the Ukrainian city of Chop, passing through the Hungarian capital Budapest. The inaugural journey on the new route took place on December 11 with 120 passengers on board.

The train from Chop to Vienna departs at 07:23 Central European Time (UTC+1) and arrives in Vienna at 16:14. In the reverse direction, the train leaves Vienna at 09:42 and reaches Chop at 19:59. Seats are available in both economy and compartment cars, equipped with Wi-Fi. Ticket prices start from 69 euros. Passengers undergo all necessary border and customs formalities at the Chop railway station during departure and arrival, as reported by the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.
