French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk arrived in Ukraine on Saturday to present a united European front in support of a proposed 30-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, The Gaze reports, citing dpa.

The four leaders’ visit comes amid heightened international diplomatic efforts, spearheaded by U.S. President Donald Trump, to secure a month-long unconditional halt to fighting that could pave the way toward a broader peace settlement.

In a joint statement, the leaders declared: “Alongside the US, we call on Russia to agree a full and unconditional 30-day ceasefire to create the space for talks on a just and lasting peace.”

They added: “We are ready to support peace talks as soon as possible, to discuss technical implementation of the ceasefire, and prepare for a full peace deal.”

The leaders reaffirmed their intention to continue pressuring Moscow through coordinated measures if Russia refuses the terms: “We will continue to ratchet up pressure on Russia’s war machine until it agrees to an enduring ceasefire,” the statement read.

Ukrainian Head of the Office of the President Andriy Yermak noted the significance of the visit, writing: “A lot of work, many topics to discuss. We must end this war with a just peace. Moscow must be forced to agree to a ceasefire.”

President Macron, returning to Kyiv for the first time in over a year, posted a personal message upon arrival: “Back in Kyiv, my first thoughts go to the Ukrainians. For over three years, you have resisted with admirable courage. For your land. For your freedom. For Europe. Because yes, the security of our continent is being decided here.”

He emphasized the collective nature of Europe’s response to Russian aggression:

In the face of Russia’s aggression, our response must be collective. This trip, we are making together with Germany, Poland, and the United Kingdom.”

Outlining the purpose of the visit, Macron stated:

First, peace. A just and lasting peace begins with a full and unconditional ceasefire. This is the proposal we are bringing with the United States. Ukraine accepted it as early as March 11. Russia, on the other hand, stalls, sets conditions, buys time, and continues its war of invasion.”
