Moldova and USA to Enhance Cooperation on Supplying American Gas to Europe
Moldova and the United States of America will collaborate on the supply of "non-Russian-origin" gas from the USA and other countries as part of Chișinău's efforts to reduce dependence on Russian energy sources. This was stated in a statement by the State Department.
The issue of energy security for Moldova and Europe was on the agenda during the Strategic Dialogue Initiative meeting between the USA and Moldova in Washington. The parties discussed programs that would contribute to the development of national resilience and energy security for Moldova.
"Both sides discussed the 'vertical corridor,' which will utilize existing gas infrastructure to deliver non-Russian gas originating from terminals in the Eastern Mediterranean to Ukraine and Moldova, and eventually from Ukraine to Central Europe," the statement from the US State Department reads.
The parties also noted Moldova's first test purchase of American natural gas in early April 2024 and emphasized that future gas deliveries from the USA will enhance both Moldova's energy security and bilateral trade relations between the USA and Moldova.
In addition to energy security and resource supply issues, the parties also discussed enhancing Moldova's potential to protect its territory, measures to safeguard constitutional neutrality, and improving the efficiency of crisis management and response.
Both sides also underscored the critical importance of continuing cooperation in cybersecurity. The United States acknowledged Moldova's significant efforts to strengthen cybersecurity and digitalization. The countries expressed readiness to deepen cooperation in this area, with Moldova also expressing interest in joining the Initiative to Counter Ransomware Programs to enhance resilience against cyberattacks and strengthen partnership relations among its members.
As a reminder, The Gaze reported that the Ministry of Justice of Romania will send several dozen legal experts to Moldova to assist the country in implementing reforms and joining the EU.
