Norway Backs Ukraine’s Agricultural Recovery With NOK 40 Million
Norway has announced a new package of humanitarian and agricultural assistance worth 40 million Norwegian kroner ($3.7 million) aimed at helping Ukrainian farmers recover war-damaged land.
The Gaze informs about it, referring to a statement published by the Norwegian government.
The funding will be channeled through the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and will focus on communities in the Mykolaiv, Dnipro, and Chernihiv regions, where fighting and explosive contamination have severely disrupted agricultural production.
Norwegian Minister for International Development Cooperation Åsmund Aukrust said Russia’s war strategy includes targeting Ukraine’s ability to feed its population and maintain agricultural exports.
“One of Russia’s methods is to undermine Ukraine’s capacity to produce food – both for domestic consumption and for global markets. Norway supports the UN’s efforts to ensure Ukrainian farmers can continue their work despite the war,” Aukrust said.
The assistance will be implemented across three key pillars. The first involves surveying and securing agricultural land, including the identification of areas contaminated by landmines and unexploded ordnance, with the aim of enabling future clearance and safe reuse.
The second component targets vulnerable households, which will receive high-quality seeds, greenhouse facilities equipped with water storage tanks, and irrigation systems to restore small-scale farming capacity.
Under the third pillar, affected families will be provided with poultry, cash support, and vouchers for animal feed and veterinary services. The FAO will also assist with the evacuation, relocation, and protection of livestock in areas facing renewed hostilities.
Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Norway has allocated approximately 150 million Norwegian kroner to UN-led agricultural programs in the country. Of that amount, 42.7 million kroner has been dedicated specifically to mapping farmland contaminated by mines.
As The Gaze previously reported, Ukraine has accused Russia of stealing approximately 15 million tonnes of grain from occupied Ukrainian territories.
