Poland Decides to Deploy Troops Eastward Amid "Wagnerites" Training in Belarus
The Minister of Defense of Poland, Mariusz Blaszczak, has made the decision to relocate military formations from the west to the east of the country due to potential threats associated with the presence of the Wagner Group in Belarus. This was reported by PAP.
Just before this decision, the Ministry of Defense of Belarus announced planned joint exercises involving their special forces and members of the private military company "Wagner" at a training ground located near Poland.
Mariusz Blaszczak expressed his strong disapproval of this situation, referring to the exercises as a "provocation." He also informed that necessary security measures were discussed during a meeting of Polish Security Committee, which took place on Wednesday.
"The Committee analyzed potential threats, including the deployment of Wagner Group units. Hence, Minister of National Defense and Chairman of the Committee Mariusz Blaszczak decided to move our military formations from the west to the east of Poland," he stated.
The primary tasks of the relocated military units will involve training and the capability to deter potential aggressors, as highlighted by a representative of the Ministry of Defense.
The Ministry of Defense of Poland expressed concern over the situation and declared that they would closely monitor further developments, ensuring the security of the country's borders.
Recalling the failed coup attempt, a portion of the Wagner Group was relocated to Belarus, which raised concerns in neighboring countries, including Poland, Lithuania, and other Baltic states.
The Presidents of Lithuania, Poland, and Latvia warned NATO about the threat emanating from Belarus. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, together with his Polish and Latvian counterparts, Andrzej Duda and Egils Levits, respectively, wrote a letter to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, cautioning about the danger coming from Belarus. The document was published on the official website of the Lithuanian President.
Poland is also anticipating a new wave of migrants from Belarus due to this situation. Deputy Minister of the Interior and Administration of Poland, Mateusz Wonsik, expressed the view that the presence of the private military company "Wagner" in Belarus could push migrants toward the Polish border.
