Romania’s Pro-European Coalition Finally Sets Date for Presidential Election Re-Run
The leaders of Romania's ruling Coalition have finally decided on a single candidate for the presidential election and agreed on the date of the election. The candidate, Crin Antonescu, is still supported by PSD, PNL and UDMR. Thus, the first round will be held on 4 May and the second round on 18 May.
The Romanian government is yet to officially approve the dates of the vote on Monday.
Romania's outgoing President Klaus Iohannis will remain in office until the election.
As previously reported by The Gaze, Romanian presidential candidate Crin Antonescu, who is supported by three parties in the government coalition, announced the suspension of his campaign as the date of the presidential election has not yet been set and the coalition that nominated him has not yet reached a consensus on his candidacy.
On 24 November, an unpopular, little-known far-right, pro-Russian politician, Kalin Georgescu, suddenly won the first round of the presidential election in Romania.
Later, the Romanian Constitutional Court annulled the results of the first round of the presidential election following allegations that Russia had conducted a coordinated online campaign to promote this far-right candidate in Tik Tok.
The European Commission launched an investigation against TikTok for interfering in the Romanian elections.
