Ukraine Registers Copyright for Artificial Intelligence-Generated Content for the First Time
For the first time, the Ukrainian National Intellectual Property Office (IP Office) has issued a copyright registration certificate for works that include images generated by artificial intelligence.
This was reported by the IP Office.
The certificate was issued to the collection of images ‘Easter Cards’, which used images generated by a computer program. The compiler of the collection is Marharyta Boyko.
The Intellectual Property Office emphasised that Ukrainian legislation grants copyright protection only to images created by a person. If images are created only with the help of AI, copyright does not arise. At the same time, the law ‘On Copyright and Related Rights’ makes it possible to define sui generis rights to such images.
In addition, the IP Office issued certificates for a children's book and a collection of poems illustrated with AI images. These are a children's book by Anna Khorolska, The Enchanted Adventure of Rufus, and a collection of poems by Andriy Sitnikov, Poems of an Unfinished War.
‘Nowadays, generative artificial intelligence is becoming an assistant in creating illustrations for various kinds of works. At the same time, copyright protection applies only to the part created by humans,’ emphasised Liubov Maydanyk, Deputy Director of the Office.
