Ukrainian High Jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh Named World Athletics Female Athlete of the Year 2024
According to World Athletics, Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Maguchikh has been named the world's best athlete in non-running disciplines in 2024. This was announced by the International Federation of Athletics.
This is the first time in the 37 years of the World Athletics award's existence that a Ukrainian woman has been recognised as the best athlete of the year in non-running disciplines.
In the 2024 season, the Ukrainian athlete won numerous awards and set a new world record. Maguchikh won her debut gold at the Olympics and the European Championships. She went on to win her third consecutive Diamond League final and set a new world record in the high jump with a leap of 2.10m.
Maguchikh beat out another finalist, Olympic heptathlete Nafissatou Thiam of Belgium, for the prize of the world's best athlete in 2024 in non-running disciplines.
For Yaroslava Maguchikh, this is her first victory in the nomination after three consecutive shortlists and her second award of the 2024 season. In October, Maguchikh was named the best athlete in Europe in 2024 by Golden Tracks.
