Ukrainian Sci-Fi Movie “U Are the Universe” to Represent Ukraine in Brazil

Ukrainian director Pavlo Ostrikov’s sci-fi movie "U Are the Universe" will represent Ukraine at the prestigious Festival de Cinema Europeu in Niterói, Brazil, The Gaze reports. The festival runs from April 24 to 30 and will feature the largest showcase of European films in Brazilian history.
"U Are the Universe" is the only Ukrainian film selected and will have its national premiere in Brazil. The screening rights were acquired by Brazilian distributor Imovision, which organizes the festival.
“Love is born when everything is about to end. In this delicate, poetic science fiction, we follow a couple trying to find meaning — and connection — at the end of humanity,” Imovision stated, adding that the film “represents the strength of the new generation of Ukrainian cinema.”
The movie tells the story of Andriy Melnyk, a Ukrainian trucker who becomes the last human alive after Earth’s destruction. Alone near a black hole, he establishes contact with a French scientist, Catherine. Their journey toward each other spans three years, during which loneliness brings them closer.
The Festival de Cinema Europeu (European Film Festival) will showcase the largest selection of contemporary European films in Brazilian history. It will bring together 14 films that best represent the European region and have already won awards at other film festivals.
In addition to film screenings, the festival will include meetings with filmmakers, a gala concert, and a nationwide information campaign across Brazil.
As The Gaze previously reported, the sci-fi tragicomedy film U Are the Universe, directed by Pavlo Ostrikov, has won two top prizes at the 13th Paris International Fantastic Film Festival and the jury prize at the Science Fiction Festival in Verona.
