Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a game-changing tool in modern warfare, and nowhere is this more visible than on Ukraine’s battlefield. In his recent article for The Gaze, Bohdan Popov, Head of Digital at the United Ukraine Think Tank, outlines how Ukraine is leveraging AI to outmaneuver a larger, better-resourced enemy.

“Modern warfare is increasingly becoming a confrontation of advanced technologies. What was a part of science fiction yesterday is now being used on the battlefield in real time,” Popov writes.

He emphasizes that AI’s application ranges from combat operations and reconnaissance to demining and information warfare. Ukrainian developments like the Brave1 innovation cluster and tools such as Griselda and Mantis Analytics have integrated AI into frontline decision-making, with systems accelerating the time between identifying and striking targets.

The Saker Scout UAV operates autonomously even when communication with the operator is lost, and AI algorithms based on computer vision allow it to ‘see’ camouflaged enemy vehicles,” he notes, citing combat-tested drones designed to overcome Russian electronic warfare.

AI is also supporting mine clearance operations: “UADamage, a startup, uses drones and sensors to detect mined areas, both on the surface and underground. This approach saves time and protects demining teams from dangerous risks.”

Popov acknowledges ethical concerns: “The increasing autonomy of combat modules raises ethical questions: how safe is it to rely on a decision-making algorithm in situations where false positives or risks to civilians are possible?

Despite those concerns, Ukraine’s quick integration of AI into defense is seen as a vital asymmetric response to Russia’s numerical and resource advantages.

Against the backdrop of Russia’s enormous potential resources, it is innovations, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence, that serve as an ‘asymmetric response’ for Kyiv,” Popov concludes.
