Today in Ukraine, Christmas is celebrated on December 25th for the first time since 1917, replacing the traditional date of January 7th. This shift reflects another cultural departure of Ukraine from outdated Russian-imposed norms.
While Europe follows the Gregorian calendar, Russia still adheres to the Julian calendar for religious holidays. Therefore, Kyiv's decision to align the celebration of major religious holidays with Europe signifies its ongoing efforts to join the EU.
"Millions of Ukrainians are eagerly awaiting the appearance of the first star in the evening sky, signalling the arrival of Christmas. A holiday with many facets, a significant church celebration, an important national event, a family celebration. Christmas, loved by children and awaited by adults. Christmas that fills hearts with light. Christmas that always brings hope," said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in his daily address, extending Christmas greetings to every Ukrainian.
He wished for the return of all parents, husbands, brothers, grandfathers, mothers, wives, sisters, and everyone celebrating Christmas tonight, including those in trenches with weapons, facing the enemy, returning as victors.
"For the second year, we experience another form of Christmas, another dimension. Christmas in times of full-scale war. Christmas with a different mood, context, and taste. It is not the usual family dinner, as not all of us are at home. Not everyone has a home. Now, it's much more important not what dishes are on the table, but who is at the table. And how precious it is when they are close.
And how important it is for those who are not nearby but defend Ukraine to stay in touch. It's heartening to see the 'little birds' on the screen, indicating that the message has been delivered and read. It's crucial to get a response from them. How our gifts, values, and traditions have changed. Today, it's not just about decorating our homes but about protecting our households and clearing them of the enemy – sweeping the foe out of our homes," said the Ukrainian president, emphasizing that today, more than ever, our collective prayer will be strong. A people's prayer that will unite millions of voices like never before. And it will resonate together with Europe and the world.
