Possible Deployment of Troops: Starmer Says Coalition of the Willing Has a Plan to Strengthen Ukraine’s Defence
UK prime minister says military plans cover air, sea, land and Ukraine’s own capabilities, with ground forces possible if needed.
The Gaze reports on it according to Ukrinform.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said that the Coalition of the Willing has developed military plans aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defence and ensuring security in the air, at sea and on land.
Starmer made the remarks during a meeting with members of a parliamentary committee.
“We held political talks with the leaders [of the Coalition of the Willing countries]. We held talks with military planners. And we told them: we need military plans for the air, sea and land, as well as for Ukraine’s own capabilities,” the British prime minister said.
When asked whether security guarantees for Ukraine could involve the deployment of British troops and equipment on the ground, Starmer said this remained a possibility if necessary.
“So now we have military plans for each of these areas. If necessary, this will include the deployment of ground forces, but obviously the main question at the moment is whether we can achieve a just and lasting peace,” he said.
Starmer warned that many peace agreements in European history have failed and, in some cases, led to even greater conflicts.
“That is why it is very important that we consider this issue in detail. Putin has repeatedly demonstrated that he will come back for more if he sees an opportunity. We must not lose sight of this,” the prime minister stressed.
He also outlined the key principles he is discussing with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the leaders of the Coalition of the Willing. According to Starmer, decisions on the most sensitive issues, including territorial matters, must be taken by Ukraine itself, reliable security guarantees are essential, and NATO, Europe and the European Union must be involved in issues that affect their collective security.
