UNESCO Scales Up Assistance to Ukraine Amid Continued Russian Aggression

On 15 April, during the 221st session of the UNESCO Executive Board, the decision “ENU” was adopted by an overwhelming majority, The Gaze reports, referencing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
This critical move urges the Director-General to intensify the emergency assistance programme and actively engage relevant partners, while monitoring the situation in Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.
Deputy Director-General Xing Qu presented the implementation report, emphasizing UNESCO’s growing efforts to mobilise resources and support Ukrainian recovery in its mandated areas. He expressed gratitude to partners and donors for contributing to these efforts.
Member States condemned Russia’s aggression, reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, and recognized recent attacks in Kryvyi Rih and Sumy as war crimes. They also called for action against the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children, protection of journalists, and safeguarding of cultural heritage.
The Group of Friends of Ukraine at UNESCO, along with the EU delegation, praised the organization’s actions and the mobilisation of $73 million in support, encouraging continued global solidarity with Ukraine.
As The Gaze previously reported, the recent Russian missile strike on Kryvyi Rih, a city in eastern Ukraine, has been identified as the deadliest attack for children in the past three years of war against Ukraine, according to UN representatives.
